The Application Process
How to attend Philmont with the Patriots' Path Council
Every summer, Patriots' Path Council sends at least twenty twelve-person crews to Philmont Scout Ranch, near Cimarron, New Mexico. Applications are accepted from crews of at least eight people. We also encourage individuals to apply, and we will pair you with a crew that has available openings.
On the day of arrival, you must be at least 14 years old or 13 and have completed the eighth grade. Crews can be male, female or mixed gender. Three or four adult advisors accompany each crew. All participants must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America.
Groups that attend Philmont are called crews. A full crew consists of twelve members with no more than four adults over 21 years old. Many Philmont crews are formed in advance by members of a single Boy Scout troop or Venturing crew. Sometimes Scouts from neighboring units get together to form a crew. Crews can always invite members from other units to complete their crew. Patriots' Path Council also forms District Provisional Crews from applications submitted by individuals and groups too small to form their own crew. See the crew allotment process for more information on how Patriots' Path Council crews are chosen.
Individual youth and adults may submit an individual application at any time as long as we still have crews without a full compliment of twelve members. Individuals are assigned to regular or provisional crews based on availability. We will attempt to match you with a crew close you your home, to make it easier to attend crew meetings and events.
To apply as a crew, you must have at least eight members at the time of the application. The required distribution of youth and adults is on the application. If you apply with less than 12 members, you must recruit additional members or be willing to accept individuals assigned by Patriots' Path Council to fill the crew.
Crew applications are available in October for Philmont treks two summers away. Applications must be submitted by the mid-January date on the application. On the fourth Tuesday of January, the Watchu Philmont Lottery is held to assign crews to the available travel dates and develop a waiting list, if necessary. Please see the crew allotment process for specific details.
Each Patriots' Path Council district may organize one provisional crew. District Provisional Crews take part in the Watchu Experience and are exempt from the Watchu Philmont lottery. A District Provisional Crew:
- has a minimum of two adult advisors who must obtain the consent and support of their district Key 3
- is comprised of participants from at least three separate units in that district
- has no more than six participants in the crew from the same unit
- submits a crew application by the mid-January deadline date on the application
The crew will ultimately need three adult advisors. Provisional crews are exempt from the Watchu Experience requirement of having at least eight individual members enrolled by the date of the February advisor orientation, but are still required to complete a full crew of 12.
An Adirondack trek at Sabattis Adventure Camp the summer before you attend Philmont is a great way to help your crew prepare for a Philmont trek. In addition to having a great adventure, you will learn many of the teamwork skills necessary for your Philmont trek. With a Watchu Sabattis Adirondack Trek you bypass the Watchu Philmont lottery, guaranteeing your crew a Philmont experience, receive priority travel date selection for your Philmont trek and you can receive a discount on your canoe trek. This popular program is limited. Applications for the combined program are available in August.
